The Star-Banner offered an opinion in a recent editorial that we would like to have you discuss. Here is the gist of what the editorial suggests our State Legislature consider:
“Allow all local School Boards for a two-year period to take a portion of the 1.75 mills (say 25%--$10 million) of the total $40 million in capital outlay money, and redirect it to the operations budget, which has been slashed by $28 million in the past year and a half, and could see that much or more cut in the coming year. The result of those cuts has been the closure of alternative schools for our worst-behaving students, a hiring freeze, no new computer purchases, no new bus purchases, bigger classes and no pay raises for teachers. This would free up money for increasing teacher salaries. The Marion County School Board just voted no salary increases for teachers in 2009.”

If $10 million a year is used by Marion County's board, how would that money get made up when the economy picks up and construction money is again needed? Seems like a bad idea of robbing from one fund to make up other expenses. Isn't this exactly what the state government is doing with its budget problems? A short sighted solution in my opinion.
I have a better idea. Give any unneeded construction money back to the taxpayers who contributed it!
When will it ever be enough? Teachers will want to make $100,000 a year and they will still complain that they are underpaid and overworked. Then when all the buildings are falling down around them and they have 60 kids in a class they will complain even harder! Things are a certian way for a reason. This is why the School System needs to be run By Business people and not Teachers. Then again I believe it was Jackie Porter who started this mess of giving construction money to Teachers for raises! Some business woman she is!

First things first, increased teacher salaries doesnt mean a better education. actually there has never been a study that proves that the higher the pay, in any job, the better performance. so more money for better education is a myth. look at washington d.c. vs. minnesota. dc spends the most and the worst schools and minn. the least money and the best. second look at private schools, especially catholic schools, less teachers pay and better education. then look at home school. new data, which can be found on worldnetdaily.com, shows that low income homeschooled kids that have parents that arent college educated turn out a better product. a few years ago the teacher unions were pushing the class size amendment like crazy. so they could lower the number of kids in the classrooms, creating smaller class sizes inadvertatly more classes, more teachers. they said that would make our kids smarter. well it hasnt. now they want construction money, our hard earned tax dollars, to go directly to the teachers. while people are loosing jobs left and right, while the average income per person in marion county is still far below that of our teachers. the teachers still want more money. we cant compete with europe in public education because of one reason. the public education system doesnt want vouchers, vouchers breed competition, which would make the public school either put up or shut up.
oh by the way if anyone didnt know, brad rogers wife is a teacher. why do you think that he wants more money for the teachers. give the tax money back to the people who work a full year not 2/3 of a year, the working man.

I'm OK on switching the funds. But only for things that DIRECTLY help students--like keeping essential programs, bus repair, special education, home school assistance, etc. Not salary increases!
With declining enrollment, the Board should be cutting back the number of teachers, keeping the really good teachers and paying them from the money saved by getting rid of marginal teachers. Or an alternative, use some of the saved money to reward the 10% or so of truly outstanding teachers. They are the ones we need to keep. Let the mediocre, who are usually the ones bitching the most about their pay, go if they want.
Sounds to me like the new Board member, Porter, is just trying to suck up to the teacher union. She is a dufus! Herring was not so good but he is a genius in comparison to this Porter gal. What is the process for removing a Board member? Better get it started before she recks the school system.
The suggestion the Florida Legislature consider allowing using local school construction money for operating expenses---that would be DOA in Tallahassee! It will never get any consideration.

How is it possible that a Board member cannot know this? Why would Porter even attempt to go against Jim Yancey and try to give Teachers raises right now when some will be losing jobs? Could she be that dumb? Or is she so smart that she figures she's only one Vote and she will be the Hero to the Public and the rest of the Board can take the heat for the Tuff decisions!Nice Lady!

havent seen paper yet, but i hope the layoffs come and start with the administration. i have been told that there is a dean for everything in the school. dean of students, dean of disipline for both boys and girls, 3 assistant principals, dean of teachers and who knows what else. what happened to the old days when there was a principal and vice principal. they did the discipline, worked with the teachers and could do it all. cut the dead weight. we could talk until we are blue in the face but until we open the discussion in the capital for vouchers the school system will continue to be legal money laundering for the teachers unions, extorting money from tax payers giving it to teachers and gisguising it under the title of education.

That includes the Marion County teachers—many of whom voted for Obama. Teachers will only have to wait another year or two and their salary increases will be 8% or more to help make up for the double digit inflation the Obama economic policies will create. Too much administration! I agree and are we still having to bus kids across country to accommadate quotas? If so, I think parents should start car-pooling their kids to school to cut back on busing expense! Not sure if this would be possible but just a thought! Also, I agree that kids should stayin school for longer periods during the year, too much holiday time if you ask me!

I think that busing is mandated so the school system cant change it. But lets say they could, you are asking an awful lot of people. That would be making parents personally responsible for an aspect of the education process.
As we blog today the parents of America dont have to feed thier kids in school(school breakfast and lunch), they dont have to drive them because of the busing, they dont have to be home after school, (after care). Public education is the biggest failed goverment program in the history of america. how come everyone always says: you want something messed up get the goverment involved but everyday, across america, we leave the most important part of this nation, our children, in the hands of the goverment, goverment employees, goverment curriculum, goverment .....

Redirecting money is probably not legal without a vote by the citizens and if attempted would further erode the low public opinion the school board already has.

totally disagree with giving education anymore of our money. i dont agree with the bailout money to the private companies. why not give the money back to the people so they can chose where to put thier kids in school instead of giving back to the failed public education system.

lets start by stating the department of educations latest report on sexual abuse in the classroom. the department of education in a 2006 study found that 10% of our public school children will be physically sexually harrassed before they graduate from high school. how about the report that john stossel did that showed our kids way behind europe on the education curve. how about a recent study that can be found on worldnetdaily.com that said that lower income families, whose parents arent college educated, that homeschool thier kids, thier kids do better on college assessment tests than public school kids educated by college grads. is that enough, it is for me. unfortunatly some of us follow like sheep the ways of the goverment and some of us do research and make our own assessment of a situation. i have done the research and made my assessment, whether you believe me or not is no concern of mine. i do what is right with my family and keep them out of the indoctrination mills if you chose to keep them in the public schools thats your business

I do have an apology to make, i think. i know that a few blogs ago i said that jackie porter was going to run against barbara fitos for county commissioner. i would like to change my bet. i heard today that jackie porter doesnt want to wait longer than she has too and wants to run for state rep against kurt kelly. i heard that porters boyfriend realized that jackie couldnt use the big .... campaign against barbara fitos and win so they are looking to run against a man and use the same stratergy against mr. kelly. dont say much, wear tight shirts and put her doctored photo all over the district. it worked once will it work again.

So Sorry Mr. D, you are just not on the cutting edge of news! Jackie Porter announced last week to a group of Teachers that the only way she could help them get better pay was to run for the State legislature! She did not specifically say she would run against Mr. Kelly but, she did say she lived in South Marion County and was planning on announcing her intentions very soon!
That's great news about Porter running for state legislator! Will get her off the School Board. She will get demolished in a race for the House. I look forward to seeing the end of her short career in politics. RUN JACKIE RUN!!!
Well i dont know how more cutting edge you can be. jackie porter just won an election 2 months ago for a 4 year term and I am the first one to bring out the Kelly vs. Porter thing and you tell me i am not cutting edge. here is the senario: jackie cant stand the school board, she has name recognition and money, running a county wided race is a lot harder then a st. rep race. a lot less ground to cover and minds to change. kelly recieved 53% of the vote against a retired rich new yorker that was arrogant and a politician that had no money and has outlasted his political welcome. look for kesselring to run again, this time as a republican, porter to also run as a republican and kelly to run as the encumbant. close race then. the winner will run against democrate retired golden boy mike sizemore, who might find it easier to win a small race than something county wide. she picks up 10% of the retired male pervert vote just by the clothes she wears.

It is STATE LAW THAT CONSTRUCTION MONEY HAS TO BE USED FOR CONSTRUCTION NOT SALARIES.
For Jackie to vote for stopping construction and using the money for slaries does not show as you say "she knows her stuff".

I think Jackie Porter vs Kurt Kelly is an exceptional idea I do hope it is the truth! I beleive that Jackie would beat Kurt. The irony of this is Kurt Kelly hated Steve Hering so badly that he did everything he could to help Jackie win from Behind the scenes! Kurt's mother even donated to Jackie's campaign. Deakins gets the nod, St.Johns and Queen of Peace is all he needs and he wins. Emery is a nice guy but is not the most popular politician or influential in Belleview anymore. His support of former Mayor Paul Anderson and Anderson's defeat is evident of that. As far as Porter vs. Kelly no chance, Kelly I heard is grooming Dobkowski for that seat. Conservative and Pro Life, I have seen them in the Voice together a bunch of times. Kelly likes the ladies and Dobkowski is a lot younger, smarter, prettier, humbler and always gets great press for Belleview. I got her mail piece when she ran for office this year and she has a resume that puts Porter's to shame. Dobkowski would blow her away in spite of her loud mouth husband Bobby D. I know I voted for her and I hate guy. If there was ever a guy in Mario County that got lucky it is him.
I agree about Christine Dubkowski she is an extremely intelligent woman! By far she out shines the entire group of Bufoons that have and our now on the Belleview City Commission.
Christine would blow Jackie out of the water as well. Christine has Children, she is a Mother, She's married, She has a proven record of being fiscally sound and I belive her breasts are real!Jackie has none of those things!

You better check the demographics of that District. He will need much, much more than the Catholic vote to win. Without support in Alachua and Levy counties Deakins will be beaten by a Democrat. There is no way I could raise 8 kids while she is in Tallahasse. As far as a college education, I do believe that people without an education can do great things, I have supported many a politician that don't have on. My point is simple, if great things can be done without a formal education, why so much emphasis on an education. But if we are going to spend billions on an education than we should be willing to give those who have one some credit. it still comes down to what people believe and you better be smart enough, whether educated by self or formally to keep up with the brain power in Tallahasse. The real race will be district two, why isnt anyone talking about mosley vs. stricland in 2010. stricland is already laying out the ground work by getting name recognition by using his comany to put his face in front of the people. mosley vs. stricland is the race to watch.
